Derwentwater

The island of St.Herbert's was once home to a religious hermit.

Otters Bield island means 'Otter's sanctuary' and must once have been home to this rare species of water animal.

At the southern end of the lake, under the glare of Derwent fells, is the famous spectacle of the floating island. This curious island appears only when the marsh gases, on which it rests at the bottom of Derwentwater, contrive to boost it to the surface. more
