Windermere
Windermere is England's largest lake and is set in the heart of the
Lake District. Named after 'Vinand', a Norse settler, the lake is
16.8 km long, 0.8 km wide and is the 2nd deepest lake in the Lake
District at 66.7 m.
It is thought that Romans used Windermere to ferry troops and supplies
to the north of the county. There is evidence that a ferry crossing
has existed at the southern tip of the lake for centuries.
