Eskdale
The construction of a Roman fort at Hardknott circa AD100 is testament
to the lengthiness of man's fascination and settlement in the area.
Recent evidence suggests human activity in the area from perhaps as
far back as prehistoric times.
Today much of the valley is uninhabited but Boot on Whillan Beck remains
a thriving village with the famous Eskdale corn mill attracting visitors
looking for a sense of the Cumbrian past.
