Windermere
Windermere (adjoined with Bowness)
is of the oldest settlements in the lakes but achieved its modern
status as one of Lakeland's most vibrant towns only with the arrival
of the railway in 1847.
Since the 19th century visitors have come to Windermere to take in
the wonderful views of Lake
Windermere (named after the Norse settler Vinand as in "Vinand's
mere") and sample the delights of central Lakeland.
